Obesity and its Related Diseases
Inoue, Shuji
Abstract
In population study, it has turned out that prevalence of obesity in Japan is 13.69% in male and 15.58% in female (BMI=26.4; 20% overweight than JASSO categorized standard body weight.), and 1.79% in male, 3.0% in female (BMI=30, More than 2 times risk odds ratios for hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and hypo-HDL cholesterolemia are BMI 27, when BMI 22 (lease diseases complicated body mass index in Japan) is estimated as standard value.
In experimental studies, we demonstrated that insulin resistance and insulin secretary deficiency are the causes of diabetes in obesity using VMH-lesioned obese rats. We also demonstrated that the causes of hypertriglyceridemia in obesity are limited adipose tissue capacity of triglyceride uptake, overesterification of released free fatty acids from the adipose tissue in the liver, and increesed activity of microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) in VMH-lesioned obese rats, and increased triglyceride secretion and decrossed lipoprotein lipase activity in Zucker fatty obese rats.
In summary, the degree of obesity in Japan is low but the problems of obesity diseases are the similar to western countries. The causes of obesity-related diseases might be heterogenous.
